2026 WTT Contender Lagos : Tsunami Thursday for Nigeria as Four Stars Crash Out

It was a disappointing Thursday for Team Nigeria at the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos as four Nigerian players exited the Men’s Singles competition, leaving Sultan Agunbiade as the country’s lone survivor in the tournament.

The day began with high expectations for the home contingent at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, but the hopes of Nigerian fans were dashed as Olajide Omotayo, Taiwo Matti, Muiz Adegoke and Azeez Solanke all suffered defeats against more experienced opponents from Europe and Asia.

Amid the wave of exits, Agunbiade emerged as Nigeria’s bright spark after defeating compatriot Matthew Fabunmi in the opening round to continue his impressive run in Lagos.

The youngster, who battled through the qualifying rounds, showed remarkable composure and attacking quality to secure his place in the next stage of the competition.

Agunbiade had already announced himself as one of the tournament’s revelations on Wednesday after beating wildcard entrant Afeez Yunus 3-1 to reach the main draw. His fearless performances and calmness under pressure have quickly won over the Lagos crowd.

His progression also comes with valuable world ranking points as he continues to build momentum on the international stage.

While Nigerians struggled, defending champion Anders Lind of Denmark survived an early scare to keep his title defence alive.

The Danish star rallied from two sets down to defeat Frenchman Lulian Chirita 3-2 in one of the most dramatic matches of the day.

Lind admitted afterward that opening-round matches are often the toughest in any tournament.

“The first match in any tournament is always the most difficult. I didn’t feel the game in the first two sets, but I fought back to win. Every match is hard, but step-by-step I will approach each game because the deeper you go, the tougher it gets,” Lind said.

The reigning champion also praised the Lagos fans for creating a unique atmosphere throughout the competition.

“The fans here are very important because of their enormous support in every match. They don’t just cheer for local players; they support everyone, celebrating every good shot or point. That energy is very motivating for us,” he added.

With four Nigerian players already out and Agunbiade now carrying the nation’s hopes, attention will shift to whether the young star can continue his giant-killing run as the tournament enters a more decisive stage.
