“A Good Team Doesn’t Bow to Pressure” — Coach Emmanuel Odidika Backs Super Eagles to Top AFCON Qualifiers Group

Coach Emmanuel Ndubuisi Odidika of Stars of Africa Academy has expressed confidence in the Nigeria national football team ahead of the CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) POMOJA 2027 qualifiers, insisting the Super Eagles possess enough quality to top Group L.

Nigeria was drawn alongside Madagascar national football team, Tanzania national football team, and Guinea-Bissau national football team following the official draw conducted at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association.

Speaking in an interview with Sports247Naija, Odidika praised the squad depth and overall quality within the Nigerian team but warned that qualification would still require maximum commitment and discipline.

“The quality is there to top the group,” he said.

“The Super Eagles have the quality to finish top of Group L in the AFCON qualifiers. You can see that in the squad depth and in their performance at the last AFCON in Morocco. But past results don’t play the game. They need to work harder than ever because every match starts at 0-0.”

With Tanzania already guaranteed qualification as tournament co-hosts, only one additional team is assured of progressing from the group — a scenario expected to increase pressure on all competing sides.

However, the coach believes Nigeria has the mentality and experience required to handle the situation successfully.

“Nigeria has enough quality players to handle pressure and secure qualification,” he stated.

“A good team doesn’t bow to pressure, it rises to it. Yes, the pressure is real, but this group has what it takes to overcome it and book their ticket.”

Odidika also warned against underrating any opponent in African football, stressing that the era of easy fixtures on the continent is long gone.

“There are no easy games in Africa anymore. African football has changed. You can’t point to one team and call them the only threat.”

“Every team in this group is capable, and none will be a pushover. Preparation and respect for every opponent is key.”

The football tactician further emphasized the importance of Nigeria securing maximum points against direct rivals within the group, particularly Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

“The Super Eagles have to face them directly and make sure they get maximum points in both games. Those results will determine how safe we are.”

Looking beyond qualification, Odidika believes discussions about Nigeria’s title ambitions should only come after securing a place at the tournament.

“Right now, the conversation should be about qualifying. Once that’s done, we can assess their performance and identify the areas to improve before AFCON, and push for a run to win it,” he concluded.
