Nigeria Win Women’s 4x400m Gold, Finish CAA Championships With 12 Medals

Team Nigeria ended their campaign at the 2026 African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, on a high after winning gold in the women’s 4x400m relay to take their total medal haul to 12.

The quartet of Esther Okon, Toheebat Jimoh, Jecinter Lawrence, and Patience Okon-George produced a dominant performance to successfully defend Nigeria’s title in the event.

Nigeria clocked 3:29.25 to finish far ahead of Ethiopia and Kenya, crossing the line almost 30 metres clear of the rest of the field in one of the most commanding relay performances of the championships.

The gold medal became Nigeria’s fourth of the competition as the country finished with four gold, five silver, and three bronze medals overall

Nigeria’s other medal on the final day came through Rosemary Chukwuma, who claimed silver in the women’s 200m after running 23.60s.

The race was won by Ivory Coast’s Maboundou Koné in 23.36s, while Chukwuma capped an impressive outing in Accra with a three-medal haul after previously winning gold in the women’s 4x100m relay and silver in the women’s 100m.

World record holder Tobi Amusan was one of Nigeria’s standout athletes at the championships after winning gold in the women’s 100m hurdles with a time of 12.83s.

Nigeria also secured gold in the mixed 4x400m relay through Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson, and Patience Okon-George, while the women’s 4x100m relay team of Rosemary Nwankwo, Jennifer Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Miracle Ezechukwu added another gold medal-winning performance.

In the silver medal events, Oyesade Olatoye finished second in the women’s hammer throw with a mark of 69.60m, while Divine Oladipo earned silver in the women’s discus event.

Nigeria’s men’s 4x100m relay team also claimed silver after clocking 38.70s.
Bronze medals came through Adaobi Tabugbo in the women’s 100m hurdles, Chidera Ezeakor in the men’s 100m, and Obiageri Amaechi in the women’s discus.

Nigeria finished fourth on the overall medal table behind Kenya, South Africa, and Ethiopia, capping off a successful championship outing in Ghana.
