‘Give Ex-Pros A Chance’ Okpara Fires Back — Says Former Stars Ready To Lead Nigerian Football

Former Super Eagles defender Godwin Okpara has pushed back against calls for continuity within the Nigeria Football Federation, insisting that former players are more than capable of taking up leadership roles in Nigerian football.

Reacting to comments by Gbenga Elegbeleye backing the current administration, Okpara argued that the time has come for ex-professionals to be given a fair opportunity to lead.

“They are capable,” he said.

According to the former international, many retired players possess both the experience and understanding of the game needed to drive meaningful change.

“They know the system,” he implied.

Okpara highlighted several respected figures, including Segun Odegbami, Felix Owolabi, and Adokiye Amiesimaka, as examples of individuals who could effectively handle leadership roles if given a level playing field.

“They can do the job,” he noted.

For him, the issue is not a lack of qualified candidates, but the absence of a fair and transparent electoral process that allows new voices to emerge.

“We need a fair ground,” he stressed.

Okpara believes that introducing former players into administrative roles could bring fresh ideas and a deeper connection to the realities of football in Nigeria.

“It will help the game,” he added.

His comments reflect the ongoing divide within Nigerian football over leadership, with some advocating continuity and others calling for change.

As the federation moves closer to its elective congress, the debate is expected to intensify.

For Okpara, however, the message is simple.

Opportunity must be earned, but it must also be given.

Because in football, those who have lived the game often understand it best.
