“I’m Not Thinking About Retirement” — D’Tigress Veteran Promise Amukamara Wants More Years With Nigeria

D’Tigress point guard Promise Amukamara has dismissed any immediate thoughts of retiring from international basketball, insisting she remains determined to continue representing Nigeria for as long as she is active and capable of contributing to the national team.

Amukamara, one of the experienced figures in the D’Tigress setup, said wearing the Nigerian jersey remains a privilege despite the many years and major competitions she has already spent with the national team.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s recent outing at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin, the point guard described her longevity with D’Tigress as an accomplishment in itself.

For Amukamara, being regarded as one of the veterans in the squad is a reminder of how far her international journey has come rather than a signal that it is approaching its end.

She expressed gratitude for every opportunity she has received to represent Nigeria, describing her time with D’Tigress as an amazing journey filled with experiences she continues to cherish.

Despite her status as one of the senior players in the team, Amukamara made it clear that retirement is not currently part of her plans.

She wants to continue giving her best whenever called upon and believes the decision over how long she remains available should ultimately depend on her ability to perform at the required level.

Amukamara has been part of an important era for Nigerian women’s basketball, providing experience and leadership as D’Tigress established themselves among Africa’s dominant teams and competed on the global stage.

Her continued presence also provides valuable experience within a national team increasingly balancing established players with the next generation.

Rather than viewing that transition as a reason to walk away, Amukamara appears ready to embrace her role as one of the senior figures helping to guide the team forward.

For the point guard, however, the motivation remains much simpler — the opportunity to play for Nigeria still means something.

After years of wearing the green and white and competing on some of basketball’s biggest stages, Amukamara is not ready to close the chapter. As long as she can still play and contribute, she wants to keep answering Nigeria’s call.
