Former Nigeria international Segun Oguns has cast serious doubt over the credibility of the upcoming Nigeria Football Federation elective congress, describing the process as a mere formality with a predetermined outcome.
In a blunt and pessimistic assessment, Oguns stated that he does not expect any meaningful change from the elections, suggesting that the result is already known.

“It’s just a formality,” he implied, raising concerns about transparency and competitiveness within the process.
According to Oguns, the incumbent NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau is likely to retain his position, regardless of opposition or expectations from stakeholders.
For him, this reflects deeper issues within Nigerian football governance, where elections, he suggests, do not always bring genuine change.
“I expect him to remain,” he said, reinforcing his belief that the outcome is predictable.
Beyond the election itself, Oguns painted a bleak picture of the future.
He warned that unless significant reforms are introduced, Nigerian football may continue to struggle, with little improvement in performance or structure.
“More gloomy times ahead,” he suggested, highlighting his lack of confidence in the current system.
His comments echo a growing sense of frustration among some stakeholders, who feel that leadership changes , or the lack thereof, have not translated into progress on the pitch.
For many, the upcoming congress represents a chance to reset and rebuild.
But for Oguns, that opportunity may already be slipping away. As the election draws closer, opinions remain divided.
While some, like Oguns, are skeptical, others remain hopeful that the process will deliver positive change.
For Nigerian football, the stakes are high.
Because leadership decisions made now could shape the future of the sport for years to come.
And as Oguns warns, if nothing changes, neither will the outcome.
