Adebote Emerges ACAN President, Calls for Unity Among Coaches

Coach Olalekan Adebote has been elected President of the Athletics Coaches Association of Nigeria (ACAN) following a keenly contested virtual election.

Adebote, popularly known as D’Victors, secured 51 votes to defeat former international athlete Coach Michael Monyei, who polled 31 votes. In the vice-presidential race, US-based coach Pat Itanyi emerged unopposed, receiving overwhelming backing from the electorate.

The newly elected president succeeds Solomon Aliyu, a board member of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria and National Team coach, whose tenure has now concluded.

In his acceptance speech, Adebote expressed gratitude to members for the confidence reposed in him, describing the victory as a collective mandate for growth and progress within the coaching community.

“This victory is not mine alone — it belongs to every coach who believes in the growth of our profession, the development of our athletes, and the unity of our association,” he said.

He congratulated fellow contestants and newly elected executives, while calling for unity across all levels of coaching in the country.

Adebote emphasised that his administration will prioritise strengthening the voice of coaches, expanding opportunities for athletes, and repositioning ACAN as a more influential and respected body within Nigeria’s athletics landscape.

He urged coaches nationwide to move beyond the election and work together toward a shared vision for the advancement of athletics in Nigeria.
