Nigeria Drops as South Sudan Top Africa in Latest FIBA Ranking

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team has dropped in the latest global rankings released by the International Basketball Federation, while South Sudan emerged as the top-ranked African nation.

According to the updated FIBA ranking, South Sudan now leads the continent and is placed 25th in the world with 472.1 points, despite dropping one place globally.

Angola sits second in Africa and 32nd in the world with 416.8 points, while Côte d’Ivoire occupies third position on the continent, moving up one spot to 38th globally with 358.9 points.

Egypt follows in fourth place in Africa and 43rd worldwide with 319.7 points, while Senegal climbed three places globally to 48th with 295.9 points.

Cape Verde ranks sixth in Africa and 50th in the world with 282.3 points, after dropping two places.

Meanwhile, Tunisia slipped three positions to 52nd globally with 278.2 points, just ahead of Nigeria, which also fell three places to 53rd in the world with 271.2 points.

Further down the list, Cameroon is ranked 59th with 233.9 points, while Mali moved up three places to 64th globally with 206.6 points.

The latest ranking highlights a shifting balance of power in African basketball, with South Sudan continuing its rapid rise following impressive performances in recent international competitions.

The drop represents another setback for Nigeria’s D’Tigers, who were previously among the leading basketball nations on the continent.
