Edwin Okon: Cameroon Friendlies Will Sharpen Falcons for WAFCON

Former Super Falcons head coach Edwin Okon believes the planned two-legged friendly matches against Cameroon will significantly aid Nigeria’s preparations for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Super Falcons are set to face the Indomitable Lionesses in a double-header as part of their build-up to the continental showpiece, and Okon says the timing of the fixtures is ideal.

“These games will help sharpen the team before the tournament,” Okon said. “Cameroon is always competitive, so it’s a good test.”

Okon noted that most of the invited players are already active with their clubs abroad, meaning fitness levels should not be a concern.

“Many of the players are coming from strong leagues, so they are match-ready,” he explained. “That gives the technical crew a solid base to work with.”

The former coach emphasized that while friendly matches are important, decisions about additional fixtures rest with the football authorities.

“Suggestions can always be made, but the final call lies with the administrators,” he stated. “Everyone wants the same thing — success for the Super Falcons.”

Okon stressed that preparation is not just about physical readiness but also tactical cohesion and team chemistry.

“These friendlies allow the coaches to test combinations and refine strategies,” he added.

He also expressed confidence in the technical team’s ability to maximize the opportunity.

“The objective is clear — defend the title. Proper preparation is key to achieving that,” Okon said.

As the Super Falcons intensify their build-up to WAFCON, Okon’s endorsement highlights the importance of structured preparation in maintaining Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
