Former Super Eagles right back Mobi Okparaku has stated that head coach Eric Chelle cannot be faulted for seeking improved terms following his performance with the national team at the last AFCON in Morocco.
Okparaku noted that Chelle arrived in Nigeria with little fanfare and faced significant skepticism, but has since elevated his profile through results and squad development.
“When he came, many people doubted him because he wasn’t a big name,” Okparaku said. “But he has proven himself with the team.”
Chelle guided Nigeria to a strong AFCON showing, rebuilding confidence within the squad and establishing a competitive structure. According to Okparaku, such achievements naturally change the conversation around a coach’s value.
“After proving your doubters wrong, it’s normal to want better conditions,” he explained. “He is no longer the unknown coach who first took the job.”
The former defender emphasized that success often strengthens a coach’s bargaining position.
“He has built credibility now. He has pedigree as the Super Eagles coach,” Okparaku added.
However, he also urged both parties to handle negotiations professionally.
“It must be a mutual discussion. The NFF and the coach should sit down and agree on what is fair,” he said.
Okparaku stressed that stability remains key for the Super Eagles, particularly during a transitional phase.
“Continuity is important. If both sides can find common ground, it will benefit Nigerian football,” he concluded.
With contract talks ongoing, Okparaku’s remarks reflect growing sentiment that Chelle’s recent achievements have strengthened his standing within the national team setup.
