Against one of Africa’s traditional handball heavyweights, Nigeria combined tactical discipline with mental resilience to seize early control of the contest at the Petit Stade.
The Golden Arrows’ compact defence and clinical attacking execution earned them a 16–13 lead at halftime, setting the foundation for a result that could prove pivotal in their group campaign.
Algeria responded with urgency after the break, ramping up the pressure and narrowing the deficit as the game entered a tense final phase. However, Nigeria refused to buckle.
Led by the composure and authority of Faruk Yusuf from the backcourt and the attacking thrust of John Shagari on the left wing, the Arrows matched Algeria’s intensity and stayed in front when it mattered most.
Goalkeeper Okwor Obinna played a decisive role in the closing minutes, producing crucial saves that blunted Algeria’s comeback and preserved Nigeria’s narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The hard-earned win hands Nigeria a valuable two points and places them in a strong position in Group A, which also includes hosts Rwanda and Zambia.
Beyond the immediate standings, the result boosts Nigeria’s confidence and underlines their growing ambition at a tournament that doubles as qualification for the 2027 IHF World Men’s Handball Championship in Germany.
The Golden Arrows will look to build on this momentum when they face Zambia on Thursday at 1:00pm, as they continue their push for a podium finish and a return to the global handball stage.
