AFCON 2025: Jay-Jay Okocha Warns Super Eagles Against Complacency Despite Strong Run

Super Eagles legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has cautioned Nigeria’s national team to remain fully focused as they intensify their push for glory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, warning that success will only come if the players stay grounded and avoid complacency.

Okocha made this known during an appearance on the Clutch9 podcast, where he spoke exclusively with Scarlette Douglas, offering a candid assessment of what the current Super Eagles squad must do to go all the way.

According to the former captain, belief, commitment and discipline remain the non-negotiables for Nigeria’s title ambitions.

“It’s all about belief, it’s all about the commitment. They’ve shown us a lot of commitment in recent years,” Okocha said.

While acknowledging that consistency has sometimes been a challenge for the team, the former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder stressed that Nigeria traditionally rises to the occasion at the AFCON.

“Of course, we’ve not been as consistent as we want, but in the AFCON, we’ve always done well. It’s a tournament we play with pride, and we got to the finals in the last edition,” he noted.

“This edition, it’s clear that all our expectations are to go all the way. We know it’s a difficult tournament, but we’re looking good.”

Okocha, however, was quick to issue a clear warning despite the team’s impressive form.

“You can’t change anything if you’re winning. You can’t do more than winning. It’s just for them not to get carried away, not to think they are there yet.”

His comments come on the back of Nigeria’s composed 2–0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-finals on Saturday. Goals from Akor Adams and Victor Osimhen sealed one of the Super Eagles’ most controlled performances of the tournament, confirming their place in the semi-finals and keeping their quest for a fourth continental title firmly on track.

The victory has now set up a blockbuster semi-final clash against host nation Morocco on Wednesday, January 14, 2026. With expectations soaring and momentum on Nigeria’s side, Okocha believes the key lies in maintaining humility and focus.

“The most important thing is for the players not to get carried away or think the job is already done,” he reiterated.

As the Super Eagles edge closer to the AFCON final, Okocha’s message is clear: talent wins matches, but discipline and focus win tournaments.
