Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has assured Nigerians that there will be no repeat of the embarrassing allowance and bonus crisis that disrupted the Super Eagles during the African World Cup play-offs, as the team prepares for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Dikko confirmed that the Presidency has already approved the Super Eagles’ AFCON budget, removing any uncertainty around players’ entitlements and logistics.
“We are working tirelessly to ensure that none of the issues we witnessed in the past happen again,” Dikko said.
He recalled the World Cup play-off episode, where players reportedly went on strike over unpaid allowances, describing it as a situation the Commission is determined not to repeat.
“That incident was embarrassing and unacceptable. We have learned from it, and we are putting structures in place to prevent a recurrence,” he added.
Dikko explained that the NSC is working closely with the Nigeria Football Federation and other relevant government agencies to ensure that all payments are processed on time and reach every member of the team.
“We are not just approving funds; we are ensuring that the money gets to the right people at the right time,” he stated.
According to the NSC chairman, financial stability is crucial to allow players and officials focus fully on football without distractions.
“When players are settled, they perform better. Our job is to remove off-the-pitch distractions,” Dikko said.
He stressed that AFCON represents an opportunity for Nigeria to restore confidence after recent disappointments and that administrative efficiency will play a key role.
“This tournament is important for Nigeria. We want the team focused, motivated, and proud to represent the country,” he added.
Dikko also urged the players to match the administrative efforts with commitment and professionalism on the pitch.
“The support is there. Now the players must respond with discipline and dedication,” he said.
As the Super Eagles head to Morocco, Dikko’s assurances will be closely watched by fans who hope that football, not controversy, will dominate Nigeria’s AFCON campaign.
