Nigeria’s medal hunt in Athletics at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games received a major boost on Sunday as Obiageri Amaechi powered to a Silver medal in the women’s Discus Throw in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Amaechi produced a season-defining performance, recording a best throw of 56.99m to finish second behind Cameroon’s Nora Atim Monie, who clinched the Gold with a narrow winning mark of 57.04m. The tight margin underscored the high level of competition as Amaechi showed composure and consistency across her series.

The medal is Nigeria’s first in Athletics at the ongoing Games, reaffirming the nation’s growing presence in field events and highlighting Amaechi as one of the country’s most reliable performers on the international stage.
Meanwhile, Nigeria narrowly missed out on a second podium finish as Commonwealth champion Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons placed fourth, managing a respectable 55.08m, but falling short of the medal zone.
With Track and Field events now fully underway, Amaechi’s Silver sets the tone for what Team Nigeria hopes will be a fruitful medal haul in the days ahead.
