Enugu is gearing up to become the badminton capital of the Southeast as the state prepares to host the fourth edition of the Southeast Zonal Badminton Championship from November 20–22 at the Indoor Gymnasium Sports Hall, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
Organised by the Southeast Badminton Outreach in partnership with the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) and the Enugu State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development — with support from the Bet9ja Foundation — this year’s championship will bring together top players from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

The three-day event, featuring male, female, and veteran categories, is expected to serve as both a talent showcase and a strategic tune-up ahead of the National Sports Festival, which Enugu will host next year. Officials say performances at the championship will help assess athletes’ mental sharpness and competitive readiness for the national stage.
BFN Board Member and 1996 Olympian, Mrs. Oby Edoga-Solaja, stressed that the major thrust of the championship remains the discovery and development of the next generation of badminton stars in the Southeast. She also renewed calls for stronger corporate and individual support to sustain the sport’s growth in the region.
According to her, ongoing initiatives — including equipment distribution, coaching clinics, and umpire training — reflect the zone’s commitment to raising badminton’s technical standards and expanding its grassroots reach.
With rising momentum and a renewed push for development, Enugu’s hosting of the championship is expected to further energise the Southeast’s badminton ecosystem ahead of a busy competitive calendar.
