In the wake of personal loss, Super Falcons and Washington Spirit forward Gift Monday has shown extraordinary strength, turning grief into motivation on the football field.
Just days after returning from Nigeria, where she laid her father to rest, the 23-year-old marked her emotional comeback with a decisive goal that reignited her team’s playoff hopes.

Facing Racing Louisville in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) quarter-final, Monday rose above the defenders in the 73rd minute to head home a crucial equalizer, eventually helping the Spirit triumph on penalties and advance to the semi-finals.
But behind that moment of celebration lay weeks of pain, resilience, and quiet endurance.
In a heartfelt conversation with ESPN, Monday opened up about the emotional toll of losing her father and how she leaned on her teammates and coaches for support—even when she preferred to grieve in silence.
“He spoke to me and said, ‘Whatever you need, we are here.’ I am very private, and I didn’t tell my teammates at first, only our player director,” Monday revealed.
“But the girls noticed because sometimes I was off, and they would come to ask how they could help. It made me feel so grateful for everybody.”
Her father’s passing, she said, has reshaped her perspective on life and football. The goal she scored in Washington was more than a number on the scoreboard—it was a moment of healing.
“If I didn’t come back and this goal didn’t happen, I might never forgive myself,” she confessed. “But with this, I know my dad is with me, giving me strength to keep going.”
Washington Spirit head coach Adrián González praised Monday’s resilience, emphasizing that the club prioritizes not just tactical and physical training, but also emotional well-being.
“Being a footballer comes with immense pressure. You have to manage that mentally, not just physically. That’s why we prioritize mental health at the Spirit,” González noted.
Her teammate, Esme Morgan, echoed similar sentiments, describing Monday as a beacon of positivity despite her struggles.
“Everyone has really looked out for Monday. She’s bubbly, cheerful, and lights up every room. I’m so proud of how strong she’s been,” Morgan said.
For Monday Gift, every match now carries a deeper meaning—each run, pass, and goal a tribute to her late father’s memory.
As Washington Spirit prepare to face Portland Thorns in the NWSL semi-finals, her story stands as a testament to courage, faith, and the healing power of football.
