Akpan Dismisses Off-Field Drama As Super Eagles Lock In On World Cup Mission

Former Nigerian goalkeeper, Bassey Akpan, has brushed aside the swirling allegations of maladministration surrounding the Nigeria Football Federation, insisting that no amount of noise or controversy will derail the Super Eagles from their World Cup qualification objective.

Speaking with trademark composure, Akpan declared that the players are “laser-focused” on the task ahead and fully aware that only performance on the pitch — not boardroom politics — will determine Nigeria’s fate in Morocco.

Akpan, who earned admiration during his playing days for his discipline and leadership, said every player in the current squad understands the weight of representing over 200 million Nigerians.

He described qualifying for the World Cup as “the pinnacle of any footballer’s career,” stressing that the team’s hunger is at an all-time high, especially after the emotional setback of missing the last edition of the tournament.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s powerful display against Benin Republic in their final group outing, Akpan said the performance proved that the squad is united and mentally tuned in.

He highlighted the team’s intensity, cohesion, and maturity, noting that such attributes will be vital when they face Gabon in the decisive playoff clash. The former shot-stopper praised the squad’s renewed mentality, pointing out that the win over Benin marked a major psychological shift for the players.

However, Akpan also issued a polite but serious warning: Gabon will arrive in Morocco with fire in their eyes. He said the Panthers, like every team in the playoffs, will give everything for a chance to reach the World Cup, making it crucial for Nigeria to play with discipline from the first whistle to the last.

He advised the players to block out distractions, remain humble, and rely on teamwork rather than individual brilliance.

Akpan ended with a rallying cry to fans, urging them to back the team with unity and positivity. “This is a moment for total focus,” he said. “If the boys maintain that hunger and fight, nobody will stop them from getting to the World Cup.”
