The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has officially launched the Rugby Rising Play Nigeria initiative — a groundbreaking community and school-based program aimed at expanding grassroots rugby development and promoting gender inclusion across the country.
The program has commenced in selected schools across Kano, Kogi, Delta, Ogun, and Edo States, with more states expected to join the rollout in the coming weeks.

According to the NRFF, Rugby Rising Play Nigeria represents a key milestone in its mission to make rugby accessible to young people, particularly girls, while using the sport as a tool to build character and leadership skills.
The initiative follows a series of capacity-building coaching workshops conducted under World Rugby standards, where participating coaches were trained and equipped with essential toolkits to deliver safe, engaging, and inclusive rugby sessions within schools.
Speaking on the development, NRFF President Dr. Ademola Are (or insert current NRFF leadership name if applicable) emphasized that the project is not only about teaching the fundamentals of rugby but also about “instilling values such as teamwork, discipline, confidence, and resilience among young learners.”
He added that the program will help create a structured pathway for identifying and nurturing future rugby talents who could go on to represent Nigeria on national and international stages.
The Federation expressed appreciation to coaches, school administrators, and state sports stakeholders for their commitment to driving the project’s success during its early implementation phase. Continuous supervision, mentorship, and technical guidance will also be provided to ensure long-term sustainability and measurable progress in each participating state.
