Rivers Angels head coach Tosan Blankson has hailed the leadership of outgoing Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) chairperson, Madam Nkechi Obi, describing her tenure as one that significantly strengthened the women’s game in the country.
Obi’s time as chairperson officially came to an end last week, and tributes have poured in from across the women’s football community. Blankson was among those who expressed gratitude for her efforts, noting that she left the NWFL on a stronger footing.

“Madam Nkechi Obi has done a remarkable job. Her leadership brought stability, organization, and visibility to women’s football in Nigeria,” Blankson said. “From improving league structures to giving female players more opportunities, her impact has been very clear. We are grateful for her service.”
Blankson highlighted that the NWFL has grown tougher and more competitive in recent seasons, crediting this development to consistent reforms by successive women administrators. “The NWFL is not the same league it was years ago. It has become more competitive, and that is down to good leadership,” he noted. “Madam Obi and those before her have lived up to expectations, and we must give them credit.”
The Rivers Angels coach also expressed optimism about the future of the league, urging incoming leadership to build on Obi’s legacy. “We expect the new chairperson to continue from where she stopped. The challenge now is to sustain this momentum, ensure better sponsorship, and provide more platforms for women players to shine. If this is done, the NWFL will only get stronger.”
Blankson concluded by stressing that women’s football in Nigeria has the potential to be one of the best on the continent. “The structures are improving, the talent is there, and the administrators are showing commitment. It is a good time for women’s football in Nigeria.”
