Kano-Born Striker Umar Abubakar Makes Impactful Second Debut for Famalicão

Kano-born striker Umar Abubakar made his second debut for Portuguese side Famalicão in their goalless draw against Gil Vicente on Sunday in the Liga Portugal.

The Nigerian forward, who came on as a late substitute in the 83rd minute, wasted no time in showing flashes of his ability and influence in attack, despite his short time on the pitch. Abubakar’s introduction brought renewed energy to the Famalicão frontline, as he held up play intelligently and created movement that unsettled Gil Vicente’s defence, leaving fans optimistic about what he can bring with more opportunities.

The 19-year-old former Nigeria U17 striker only joined Famalicão in July after a breakout spell with Belgian side Jong KAA Gent, where he scored an impressive 21 goals in 27 matches at youth level, earning the Youth Player of the Season award. His performances caught the eye of several European clubs, but Famalicão secured his signature on a five-year contract, reportedly worth around €800,000, underlining their confidence in his long-term potential.

Abubakar, who started his football journey with Footwork FC in Kano, has been tipped as one of Nigeria’s brightest young attacking talents. Standing tall and boasting a powerful frame, he combines physical strength with intelligent positioning and finishing ability, qualities that have already drawn comparisons with some of Nigeria’s prolific centre-forwards of the past.

Although Famalicão failed to break down Gil Vicente in the stalemate, Abubakar’s cameo offered encouragement to head coach Armando Evangelista, who is gradually integrating the teenager into his plans for the season.

With Famalicão known for developing young players and giving them a platform in the Primeira Liga, Abubakar is expected to gain more playing time as the campaign progresses.

For Nigerian football followers, his progress in Portugal will be closely monitored as he seeks to establish himself in Europe’s top tier and possibly force his way into national team reckoning in the near future.
