US Smash: Aruna Set For Blockbuster Showdown With Arch Rival Harimoto In Round of 3

Nigeria’s top-ranked table tennis star, Quadri Aruna, is set to face world number four and tournament third seed, Tomokazu Harimoto, in a highly anticipated Round of 32 clash today (Wednesday) at the prestigious US Grand Smash in Las Vegas.

This matchup marks the seventh meeting between the two elite players in six years, with Harimoto currently holding the edge in their head-to-head rivalry.

However, Aruna has won two of their last three encounters, including a memorable five-game upset at the WTT Champions Frankfurt in November 2024, where he edged the Japanese star 3–2 in a thrilling contest.

Their most recent meeting came earlier this year at the WTT Star Contender Doha, where Harimoto cruised to a straight-sets (3–0) victory on January 11. Prior to Aruna’s recent wins, Harimoto had enjoyed dominance in their earlier matchups, including emphatic victories at the 2021 Star Contender Doha (3–0), 2019 World Cup in Chengdu (4–1), and the 2019 Hong Kong Open (4–0).

Now aged 22, Harimoto remains one of the sport’s most complete and dangerous players.

Known for his blistering speed, aggressive forehand, and tactical sharpness, the Japanese star enters this tie with a 76% win rate in 2025 and is seeded third at the tournament.

Aruna, meanwhile, is riding high after a commanding first-round performance on Monday, where he dismantled China’s Zhou Qihao in straight games (11–9, 11–8, 11–7) in just under 30 minutes.

Despite a slow start that saw him trail 0–5 in the opening game, Aruna rallied back to level at 6–6, before taking control with his trademark explosive forehand and deep serves to clinch the first game 11–9. He followed up with similar resilience in the second set, overturning a 3–5 deficit to win 11–8, and closed out the third 11–7 as Zhou struggled to contain the Nigerian’s relentless pace and clever shot placement.

The African number one ended the match with 33 total points, including 19 on his own serve, and displayed composure under pressure by matching Zhou’s longest point streak of five and coming from behind multiple times.

With up to 2,000 ITTF World Ranking points available to the eventual winner in Las Vegas and 350 points for quarterfinalists, each round carries significant weight. A deep run at the US Smash could help Aruna regain momentum in the global rankings, where he has slipped in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s other representative, Olajide Omotayo, bowed out early. The former African Games champion was eliminated in the men’s singles preliminary round after a 3–1 loss to Victor Xie, with game scores of 11–9, 6–11, 4–11, 8–11.

All eyes will now be on Aruna as he prepares for another electrifying showdown—this time against one of the sport’s finest talents. Victory today would not only extend his impressive run but also send a strong message ahead of the tournament’s latter stages.
