Nigerian thrower Onome Ogbeni delivered a standout performance at the Iron Wood Classic, hurling a massive Personal Best (PB) of 17.75m in the women’s Shot Put to move up to 3rd on Nigeria’s all-time list. Her throw places her behind only national legends Vivian Chukwuemeka and Nneka Okwelogu.

Ogbeni’s record-breaking moment came on her very first attempt, showcasing her readiness to challenge the 18m barrier. Though she fouled her subsequent throws while attempting to push further, the 17.75m effort marked a significant leap from her previous PB of 17.03m — a clear sign of progress and potential.
Notably, Ogbeni was the sole entrant in the women’s Shot Put at the meet, but her performance resonated beyond the empty field, affirming her place among Nigeria’s top prospects in the event.
Elsewhere at the same competition, two other Nigerian athletes put up strong showings. Obiageri Amaechi claimed 3rd place in the women’s Discus with a throw of 59.18m, while Sade Olatoye impressed in the Hammer Throw, finishing 2nd with a Season’s Best of 66.57m. She was narrowly edged out by Great Britain’s Amber Simpson, who won with a mark of 67.11m.
The trio’s performances underline Nigeria’s growing depth in field events and offer optimism ahead of upcoming international competitions.
