Amokachi Hails South Africa’s U-20 Triumph: “A Philosophy That Defines Their Football”

Former Nigerian international and CAF U-20 AFCON Technical Study Group member, Daniel Amokachi, has lauded South Africa’s U-20 national team, Amajita, for their remarkable journey to clinch their maiden U-20 Africa Cup of Nations title.

Speaking after the final match, Amokachi emphasized the team’s adherence to a distinct footballing philosophy and their significant improvement throughout the tournament.

“They are the only country that have a philosophy that is well known, so thumbs up to South Africa for that because it dates back to previous generations and has lived on,” Amokachi stated.

“They have quality, and it speaks volumes of the league.”

South Africa’s U-20 team, under the guidance of coach Raymond Mdaka, showcased resilience and tactical discipline, culminating in a 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final held in Cairo on 18 May 2025.

This victory not only marked their first U-20 AFCON title but also secured their qualification for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Amokachi, reflecting on the team’s progression, noted, “Despite their slow start, the team bounced back to emerge as African champions. They maintained a style of play that defines their philosophy.”

The former Super Eagles striker also highlighted the role of the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the domestic league in nurturing talent and fostering a cohesive playing style.

“We should give credit to SAFA and the league. The league is doing well, and that is why we see the quality football,” he remarked.

As a member of the CAF Technical Study Group, Amokachi’s insights underscore the importance of a consistent footballing philosophy and the development of homegrown talent in achieving continental success.

South Africa’s triumph serves as a testament to the effectiveness of long-term planning and investment in youth development, setting a benchmark for other African nations aiming for similar success on the continental stage.
