In the heart of Ogun State lies Ikenne, a town once best known as the hometown of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, one of Nigeria’s foremost nationalist leaders.
Today, however, Ikenne has evolved beyond its rich political and educational heritage — thanks to the remarkable contributions of businessman and sports investor, Mr. Kunle Soname, the town has transformed into Nigeria’s football headquarters.

Long before its football fame, Ikenne was a symbol of visionary leadership and intellectual depth.
The late Chief Awolowo, whose progressive ideology shaped governance in the Southern region, brought national and international attention to the town.

Fast forward to the modern era, another illustrious son of Ikenne, Mr. Kunle Soname, has given the town yet another identity — a global football hub. Through his visionary investment in sports, particularly football, Soname has turned Ikenne into a magnet for football development, national tournaments, and international attention.
At the center of this transformation is Remo Stars Football Club, nicknamed The Sky Blue Stars. The club recently broke a 25-year jinx by becoming the first team from the South West to win the Nigeria Premier League.
Not only that, Remo Stars also became the first Ogun State-based team in decades to compete in CAF interclub competitions — a monumental achievement for a club founded just 15 years ago.
Complementing the senior team’s rise is their youth outfit, Beyond Limits FC, which has been rewriting the history of grassroots football in Africa. Beyond Limits became the first African club to win the prestigious Viareggio Cup in Italy, and have dominated Nigerian youth football — winning the Nigeria Professional Football Youth League twice, the Creative Championship (TCC) a record four times in a row, the TCC Cup twice, and recently clinching the 2023/2024 NNL Super 8 Promotion Playoff.
Thanks to the state-of-the-art Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne, the town now hosts major national events — from CAF competitions to AFCON qualifiers and national team camps. Football administrators, scouts, and fans from across Africa now see Ikenne not just as a town, but as a beacon of Nigeria’s football future.
With a blend of history, education, and now elite sports infrastructure, Ikenne has become one of Nigeria’s most talked-about towns — and it owes its modern-day global relevance in football largely to the unwavering vision of Mr. Kunle Soname.
