2023 West African Universities Games: Obafemi Awolowo University Unveils Mascot

The Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Prof Simeon Bamire, has unveiled the official mascot for the upcoming 2023 West African Universities Games (WAUG).

The university, located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, is set to host the prestigious event, expecting participation from over 200 universities in disciplines such as table tennis, basketball, and athletics.

During a press conference held at the university, Prof Bamire reassured that comprehensive plans have been meticulously executed to guarantee the safety, welfare, and seamless execution of the games.

He emphasized the commitment to providing top-notch facilities and services, including accommodation, security, and medical support, ensuring a rewarding experience for officials, participants, and their handlers.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the positive impact of sports activities in addressing and reducing restiveness among students. He emphasized how these events contribute to relaxation and enhance the teaching-learning process at the institution.

Prof Bamire expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for his support and acknowledged the commitment of Interior Minister, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who has pledged to be the special guest of honor for the opening and closing ceremonies.

President of the West Africa Universities Sports Federation, Shaibu Tanko, commended OAU for hosting the games, noting that it would strengthen relationships among West African nations.

Tanko expressed optimism that the event would rejuvenate the association and foster unity in the region.
