Zidora Africa @Play: “We’re Working Hard”: Secretary General of Nigerian Mixed Martial Arts Federation, Israel Inwang, Shares Insights on the Sport’s Growth and Future

Israel Inwang, the Secretary General of the Nigerian Mixed Martial Arts Federation, shared his thoughts on the growth of the sport in Nigeria and its representation at the 13th African Games, Sports247 reports.

Inwang expressed his excitement about the sport’s inclusion in the games as a demonstration sport, calling it “one of the best things that can ever happen to mixed martial arts.” He highlighted the sport’s recent recognition as a full federation by the Federal Ministry of Sports and its successful outing at the African Games as significant achievements.

Inwang also spoke about the potential of the sport, stating that if it were not a demonstration sport this year, the Nigerian team would have won numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals. “In fact, every athlete that we came with, all are going back with a medal. So it’s massive,” he said.

Reflecting on the progress of mixed martial arts in Nigeria, Inwang said, “It makes us feel that we’re working hard. This is a litmus test for the federation in the continent to show how far we have gone.”

He added that Nigeria is currently the number one country in Africa for the sport and expressed hope that it would soon be included in the Olympic games.

Discussing the challenges of funding, Inwang acknowledged the support of the government and the Minister of Sports. He also mentioned the federation’s partnerships with various organisations and hinted at some key partnerships with international organisations that will be announced in the coming months.

Inwang’s comments underscore the rapid growth of mixed martial arts in Nigeria and its potential for further development. As the sport continues to gain recognition and support, it opens up new opportunities for Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
