- Head coach of Zambia’s women’s national team, the Copper Queens, Nora Hauptle, has revealed that her side’s ambition at this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) goes beyond focusing solely on Nigeria.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Hauptle stressed that while Nigeria remain Africa’s most successful women’s team, Zambia must guard against tunnel vision by overlooking other strong opponents in their group.
“Our objective is not just to compete against Nigeria,” Hauptle said. “We must ensure we do not lose sight of the other teams in our group. Every match at WAFCON is important.”
The Zambian coach pointed to her team’s steady rise in recent years, highlighted by impressive performances on the continental and global stage, as proof that the Copper Queens are no longer outsiders.
“We have had some strong results internationally, and that gives us confidence,” she noted. “But confidence must be matched with discipline and consistency.”
Hauptle described Nigeria’s Super Falcons as the benchmark for African women’s football, insisting that Zambia must measure themselves against the best if they are to achieve their ultimate goal.
“Nigeria set the standard in Africa,” she added. “If you want to win WAFCON, you must be ready to face teams like Nigeria and perform at a very high level.”
However, the coach was clear that Zambia’s dream is not merely to compete but to challenge for the title.
“Our dream is to win the WAFCON,” Hauptle stated. “That means staying focused, respecting every opponent, and bringing our best football to every game.”
As preparations continue, the Copper Queens will be looking to build on their growing reputation and prove they can consistently challenge Africa’s elite on the biggest stage.
