While also pointing out the need for youths across Nigeria to be part of the holy days, Gawuna noted that the country is blessed with the rare opportunity of having both Christian and Muslim fasting periods start on the same day.
Gawuna, who is a former deputy governor of Kano State and current chairman of Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), then urged all Muslims and Christians to be tolerant with one another as well as show love to anyone they come across during these days of fasting.
The YSFON number one official also charged followers of Islam and Christianity in Nigeria to show the true values of love, peace, unity and tolerance during this period of abstinence.
His charge came as Muslims on Wednesday began 30 days Ramadan fasting, during which period they are expected to abstain from food, drink and sexual relationship from dawn until setting of the sun.
At the same time, Christians began 40 days of fasting from Ash Wednesday, and they are expected to remain holy all through the period that will end with Easter, to commemorate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As both fasting periods unfold simultaneously, Gawuna stressed that, for Muslims and Christians to commence their annual abstinence rites on the same day indicates the essence of unity and togetherness in moving Nigeria forward effectively.
“It’s not by coincidence that the two religions are beginning their fasting on the same day. Fasting is a period of sober reflection and abstention from negative behaviour.
“My advice for this period is that I want adherents of the two religions to be tolerant, peaceful and show love to their neighbours,” the YSFON boss concluded.
