Youth Talent Shines as FIBA Africa Zone 3 Academies Tournament Dunks Off in Lagos

The vibrant city of Lagos has come alive with the sounds of bouncing balls and roaring crowds as the inaugural FIBA Africa Zone 3 Academies Tournament tipped off on July 5 at the Dolphins Basketball Court.

The four-day basketball showcase, running until July 8, is already proving to be a thrilling celebration of emerging talent and regional collaboration in youth basketball.

Featuring over 20 academy teams from Nigeria and Ghana, the tournament has brought together 14 male and 7 female teams for an electrifying battle on the hardwood. The boys’ teams are battling it out in a group-stage format, while the girls compete in a round-robin contest—each game painting a picture of grit, talent, and hunger for growth.

Despite the absence of some invited teams, the energy remains palpable, and the Dolphins Female Basketball Foundation Hall has transformed into a hub of youthful enthusiasm and elite competition.

“This tournament is more than just games; it’s about development, exposure, and paving a path for Africa’s next basketball stars,” said one of the event organizers.

Day 1 delivered gripping moments and standout performances:

Hoopsdream dominated Vedione (37–10), while Maktown held firm against O’Connell (15–7).

One of the day’s closest contests saw TABA narrowly lose to M2 Academy (20–22), only to bounce back with a win over Raptors (Female) (9–5).

Beyond the Scores

This tournament aligns with FIBA Africa’s broader mission of grassroots development and regional talent discovery. Nigeria, with its rich basketball history—including six U-18 African Championship titles—is leading by example, while nations like Côte d’Ivoire and Benin are also seeking their place on the youth basketball map.

As the games continue, scouts, coaches, and basketball enthusiasts remain glued to the action, hoping to spot the next big names to emerge from African soil.

The FIBA Africa Zone 3 Academies Tournament is more than just a competition—it’s a statement that youth basketball in West Africa is alive, evolving, and ready to reach new heights
