Youth Olympics Will Give Nigeria’s Emerging Athletes Valuable International Exposure – Kola Daniel

As the countdown gets tighter to the 2026 Youth Sumner Olympic Games, which starts this Saturday in Dakar, Senegal, the competition has been described as an opportunity for Nigeria’s emerging athletes to gain international exposure.

This prophetic verdict was served by National Sports Commission (NSC) director-general, Honourable Bukola Olopade’s special assistant media, Kola Daniel, who reasoned that Nigeria is bound to get many benefits from the upcoming multi-sports gathering.

Sports247 reports that Daniel disclosed in a press statement ahead of Saturday’s opening ceremony in the capital of Senegal that Nigeria will be represented by 19 athletes – 12 female and seven male – spread across athletics, boxing, road cycling, swimming, table tennis and beach volleyball.

While pointing out that the Youth Olympics is taking place in an African country for the first time in history, Daniel expressed a strong level of confidence that Nigeria’s contingent will excel in all six sports events that they are set to compete in during the Games that will hold until the 13th of next month.

Daniel added, “The fourth edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games will run until 13 November 2026 across three host zones in Senegal, namely Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly, with thousands of young athletes from across the world expected to compete for honours.

“Athletics will account for Nigeria’s largest contingent with nine athletes, comprising five women and four men. Swimming will feature four Nigerian athletes, two women and two men, while table tennis will have two representatives, a male and a female athlete.

“Nigeria will also field one female boxer, one female road cyclist and a two-athlete women’s beach volleyball team. The Nigerian contingent is currently undergoing final preparations following a 21-day local camping programme that commenced on 9 October and is scheduled to conclude on 29 October.

“The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games provide an important platform for Nigeria’s emerging athletes to gain valuable international exposure, compete against some of the best young talents in the world and build experience towards future senior-level competitions, including the Olympic Games.”

Sports247 gathered further that officials of the NSC and Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) have also urged the athletes to avoid drug issues, maintain focus and participate with patriotic zeal, in order to make the country proud in Dakar, where they are expected to translate months of preparation into impressive performances.
