Youngsters Mesmerize on Opening Day as Battle for Main Sraw Heats up

The opening day of the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, belonged to Nigeria’s youngsters. They may not have claimed all the victories, but their spirited performances and fearless displays won over the crowd, leaving fans enthralled by their promise.

Elizabeth Emelike, Marvelous Joseph, Joshua Samson, and Umar Ayoola stepped into the spotlight, facing seasoned opponents with admirable composure. Emelike, unranked and undaunted, rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Slovenia’s Ana Tofant to deliver one of the day’s surprises — a hard-fought 3-2 triumph over world No. 421 in the women’s singles.

Joseph, making his debut, showed grit and determination, rallying from 2-1 down to edge Mustapha Bello 3-2 in his opening group match.

Samson battled valiantly but succumbed 1-3 to Cameroon’s Igor Boulmo, while Ayoola, despite flashes of brilliance, bowed out after two defeats. His fearless play, however, left fans convinced he is a star for the future.

As the tournament moves into Day 2, the stakes rise. The battle for places in the main draw intensifies, with hundreds of players from the qualifying rounds vying for the eight coveted slots in both the men’s and women’s singles. The energy is palpable, and Lagos once again proves itself a stage where ambition and talent collide.

Meanwhile, World Table Tennis (WTT) has hailed Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos, as a true embodiment of energy, passion and ambition, having hosted the WTT tournament uninterrupted over the last three years.

According to WTT Event Executive Director, Mounir Bessah, Contender Lagos has become a permanent fixture on the WTT calendar, consistently raising the bar each year.

“This event has become a key stop on the global WTT calendar, and we are delighted to return to this vibrant city once again. Lagos embodies energy, passion and ambition. These qualities are reflected in the athletes, coaches, officials, partners and fans joining us this week,” Bessah said.

He emphasized that the tournament continued to deliver a professional, athlete centered experience that showcased world-class table tennis while creating lasting memories for everyone involved.

Bessah disclosed: “Our team has worked closely with the Local Organising Committee to enhance every aspect of the event — from the field of play and athlete services to fan engagement and broadcast delivery. Each edition in Lagos has raised the bar, and 2026 is set to build further on that legacy as we expand the WTT Series across Africa and the world.

“I would like to thank our hosts, sponsors and partners for their invaluable support, and acknowledge the dedication of all staff and volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes,” he added.
