Team Nigeria made an emphatic statement at the 2025 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championship, turning the continental stage into a showcase of youth excellence, determination, and record-breaking brilliance.

Competing against elite swimmers from across West and Central Africa, the Nigerian contingent produced one of its best-ever performances — collecting 30 medals (11 Gold, 5 Silver, and 14 Bronze) in the Junior Division and finishing among the top three nations overall.

At the heart of Nigeria’s triumph was 14-year-old sensation Aidan Dumuije-Abili, who emerged as the star of the championship. Aidan set five new Africa Zone 2 records, claimed six gold medals, one silver, and one bronze, and was voted the Most Valuable Junior Athlete of the tournament.

His performance in the 100m Freestyle (55.31s, 610 points) stood out as one of the best individual times of the entire event — a mark that underscores his rising dominance in African swimming.

“Breaking records is exciting, but making Nigeria proud means even more,” Aidan said after his final race, embodying the team’s patriotic spirit.

Equally impressive was another 14-year-old prodigy, Endurance Olise, who marked his debut with two gold medals, displaying both confidence and raw potential that thrilled spectators.

The championship also witnessed the emergence of 12-year-old Maryam Muhammed, one of the youngest competitors in the tournament. Despite her age, she demonstrated remarkable composure and skill, winning both individual and team medals — earning praise from coaches who hailed her as “a star in the making.”

Nigeria’s dominance extended to the long-distance events, where Timilehin Olaya solidified his reputation as the nation’s best open-water junior swimmer. Olaya captured three gold medals, setting new championship records in the 800m and 1500m freestyle events.

Meanwhile, Tofunmi Ibidapo impressed with her versatility, bagging gold, silver, and bronze medals in both individual and relay categories, while Goodluck Godwin earned selection for the World Aquatics “Future Wave” training program, a prestigious camp reserved for the continent’s most promising talents.

Veteran swimmer Dorcas Oka and senior teammate Agnes John added depth to Nigeria’s medal haul, ensuring that both the junior and senior divisions delivered strong showings.

Leader of the Nigerian delegation, Taiwo Oriss, commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its consistent support in developing young swimmers, noting that Nigeria’s success was a product of strategic investment in youth programs and structured athlete development.

“These results are proof that our youth system is working. Nigeria is no longer just participating — we’re competing, breaking records, and producing future champions,” said Coach Abiodun Ojomo.

With record-breaking performances and a surge of promising young talent, the 2025 Africa Zone 2 Swimming Championship marks a turning point for Nigerian swimming — signaling the rise of a new generation ready to take on Africa’s best and bring glory to the green and white.
