Women Power Drive! Nigeria Launches Netball Federation Board with Bold Global Ambitions

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has taken a significant step toward expanding women’s sports in Nigeria with the official inauguration of the board of the Nigeria Netball Federation (NNF).

The ceremony, held on May 5, placed renewed focus on the growing influence of women in Nigerian sports and the need to harness that momentum across more disciplines.

Speaking at the event, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko highlighted the consistent success of Nigerian women on the global stage as a key motivation behind the move.

“When the women are on parade, we go to sleep assured they will deliver,” he said, referencing recent successes in wrestling and athletics.

Dikko revealed that the newly inaugurated federation is built on a strong foundation, with 70 percent female representation, and emphasized plans to develop netball into a globally competitive sport for Nigeria.

“This is a sport that will empower women. We want to take it back to schools and create opportunities for young girls who may not gravitate toward other sports,” he added.

The NSC also confirmed efforts to engage players of Nigerian descent abroad who are willing to represent the country in netball, signaling a strategic push toward international competitiveness.

Director-General of the Commission, Bukola Olopade, expressed confidence in the composition of the board, describing it as a reflection of the Commission’s commitment to competence and professionalism.

“We have people with proven track records here. This is not just a board in name—everyone will be actively involved,” he assured.

In her acceptance speech, NNF President Esther Aluko described the moment as a turning point for the sport, which she said had lacked structure and recognition for years.

“For decades, netball drifted without direction. Today, we have legitimacy, recognition, and a platform to grow,” she stated.

She credited the NSC’s leadership for integrating netball into the national sports framework, adding that the move opens the door for development, visibility, and long-term success.

With strong institutional backing and a clear vision, the Nigeria Netball Federation now begins a new chapter—one aimed at empowering women, reviving the sport at grassroots level, and positioning Nigeria as a force in global netball.
