Wisdom Onyema: From Barefoot Beginnings To Football Dreams

By Egbu Amarachi Favour

On a calm Sunday evening, the echoes of ambition filled the air as 25-year-old Wisdom Onyema, a determined beginner at his community’s youth football academy, shared his inspiring journey.

Wisdom’s love for football dates back to his primary school days, when he and his elder brother would kick makeshift balls around barefoot. What began as childhood fun soon became a passion — and now, a dream he is chasing with every step on the pitch.

“I realized it was my talent and passion,” Onyema said with a bright smile.

Playing as a striker, he thrives on speed, movement, and the thrill of finding the back of the net. He admires the attacking flair of African greats like Victor Osimhen and Sadio Mané, studying their game to refine his own.

But Onyema’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Starting out without proper football boots, balancing academics with training, and navigating the tough early stages of the sport tested his resolve. Yet, his family’s encouragement kept his fire burning.

His proudest moment came in a local tournament, when he scored his very first goal. “It was amazing and exciting. The whole team celebrated with me. I felt like a real footballer for the first time,” he recalled, his eyes lighting up with the memory.

Looking ahead, Onyema envisions himself growing into a professional player, fueled by hard work, discipline, and faith. “I want to join a bigger academy and one day play professionally, with the help of God and focus,” he said.

From barefoot beginnings to bold aspirations, Wisdom Onyema’s story is proof that passion, persistence, and belief can transform dreams into destiny.
