The 2026 Winter Olympics officially commence today, February 6, in Milano-Cortina, Italy, with a spectacular opening ceremony set to take place at Milan’s iconic San Siro Stadium.
While some events tipped off earlier on February 4, the Games will run until February 22, featuring over 3,500 athletes from 93 countries competing across 16 winter sports disciplines.
Nigeria’s presence at Milano-Cortina 2026 will rest on a single athlete — cross-country skier Samuel Ikpefan, who also carries the honour of serving as the nation’s sole flagbearer.
When Will Samuel Ikpefan Compete?
Ikpefan is scheduled to participate in two cross-country skiing events during the Games:
Men’s Sprint Classic: February 8, 2026
Men’s 10km Interval Start (Free): February 13, 2026
These two races will represent Nigeria’s only competitive appearances at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Ikpefan’s Olympic Journey
Now 33, Ikpefan is making his second consecutive Winter Olympic appearance for Nigeria.
He previously competed at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, where he finished 73rd in the men’s sprint event.
Born and raised in the French Alps, Ikpefan has continued to play a pioneering role in placing Nigeria on the global winter sports map.
He remains the country’s only confirmed athlete for the Milano-Cortina Games.
