Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente struggled to hold back his emotions after guiding La Roja to a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the FIFA World Cup final, describing his players as a generation that has “won everything” after completing their journey to the top of world football.
Spain dethroned the defending champions with another masterclass in possession football, dominating much of the final against Lionel Messi’s Argentina before Ferran Torres’ second-half strike settled the contest. While the scoreline remained narrow, De la Fuente believed his side had done enough to finish the match much earlier.
“I think the match should have been over much earlier,” the coach said. “Their goalkeeper made two incredible saves that stopped us from taking a more convincing lead. But this is a World Cup final, and even when they were down to ten men at the end, you still have to suffer. We like suffering because today we’ve shown once again that we’re prepared for anything.”
The victory crowned a remarkable rise under De la Fuente, who has transformed Spain into one of the world’s most dominant sides by sticking to a philosophy built on teamwork, technical excellence and unwavering belief. Before the tournament, the Spanish coach had stressed that collective effort, not individual talent, would be the key to winning football’s biggest prize.
Moments after lifting the trophy, however, tactics took a back seat to emotion.
Fighting back tears during his post-match interview, De la Fuente reflected on the players who had grown together under his guidance.
“I’m very emotional now. Looking back and thinking about them… we’ve spoken a lot with the players, and they kept saying, ‘We’ve won everything. Everything.'”
He described the squad as more than just outstanding footballers.
“This generation is an example for Spanish sport, for the youth of Spain and for the country. They grew up with this footballing idea, improved it and became a true team—a family. To have accompanied them on this journey has been an honour.”
The interviewer, visibly emotional himself, remarked that De la Fuente always appeared calm and composed. The coach smiled before admitting that, beneath the surface, he was overwhelmed by what his players had achieved.
He also credited Spain’s unity as the foundation of their success.
“Together we are stronger. Nobody doubts that.”
That philosophy was evident throughout the final. Spain controlled possession, restricted Argentina’s attacking threat and patiently waited for the breakthrough that eventually came through Ferran Torres. The result secured Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title and cemented De la Fuente’s place among the country’s greatest national team coaches.
For De la Fuente, though, the night’s greatest achievement was not simply winning another trophy. It was seeing a generation of players fulfil the potential he had long believed they possessed.
“We’ve won everything,” he said.
After conquering Europe and now the world, there was little left for Spain’s golden generation to prove.
