West African Scrabble Championship Kicks Off In Lagos With International Participation

The West African Scrabble Championship has commenced in Lagos, featuring teams from The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, who have arrived at the Novotel Hotel, Lekki.

The tournament, set to unfold at the luxurious hotel, began today and promises to showcase top-notch Scrabble competition among West African nations.

Bright Idahosa, Chairman of the Accommodation and Venue Sub-Committee of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), highlighted the choice of Novotel Hotel for its serene ambiance, luxurious setting, and first-class services.

“We want our players and our visitors from the West Coast to feel at home and enjoy the very best of Nigerian hospitality while here. The hall for the competition is spacious and tournament-friendly,” Idahosa stated.

Team Nigeria, comprising 21 members, including defending champion Eta Karo, made the move from their camp at Wood Peckers Garden, Yaba, to the championship hotel in preparation for the intense Scrabble battles.

The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) has curated an impressive event with a prize pool of $12,000 for the top 10 individuals and the top three teams at the championship.

The allure of international participation and the substantial prize money underscore the significance of the West African Scrabble Championship in the regional Scrabble community.

John, the Technical Director of the NSF and Chairman of the Technical and Tournament Logistics Sub-Committee, provided insights into the championship’s format.

The competition spans 28 games, incorporating one random, 22 lagged, and five “kings of the hill” pairings, ensuring a challenging and strategic test of the participants’ Scrabble prowess.

As the Scrabble enthusiasts from West Africa converge in Lagos, the Novotel Hotel sets the stage for a competitive yet convivial atmosphere, fostering camaraderie among participants and exemplifying the spirit of regional collaboration in the realm of mind sports.
