Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games medal hopeful Onome Omolola Didih has declared that Team Nigeria is fully prepared to compete for podium finishes at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, insisting the athletes have been given the ideal environment to succeed.
The reigning African weightlifting champion believes the quality of preparations organised by the National Sports Commission (NSC) has left the athletes in peak condition ahead of one of the biggest multi-sport events on the calendar.
After weeks of camping in Nigeria before moving to Aberdeen, Scotland, Didih says the team has enjoyed a professional training environment that has allowed athletes to focus entirely on performance.
“Our preparations have been excellent. The camping environment in Nigeria and here in Aberdeen has been very conducive, and that has helped us prepare well for the Commonwealth Games,” Didih said.
The Nigerian weightlifting star heads into the Games as one of the country’s brightest medal prospects following an outstanding run of form on the international stage.
Earlier this year, she dominated the 2025 African Weightlifting Championships in Mauritius, winning three gold medals in the women’s 53kg category after producing a combined lift of 203kg to finish as Africa’s top-ranked lifter in her division.
That performance has raised expectations that she can add a Commonwealth Games medal to her growing collection of international honours.
Despite the pressure that comes with being one of Nigeria’s leading medal contenders, Didih says the athletes remain focused on rewarding the country’s investment in their preparations.
“The NSC has created the right atmosphere for us to succeed, and we are determined to repay that confidence by winning medals for Nigeria,” she added.
Team Nigeria is expected to compete across several sports in Glasgow, with weightlifting traditionally remaining one of the country’s strongest medal events at the Commonwealth Games.
For Didih, however, past achievements will count for little once competition begins.
The African champion believes success will depend on discipline, execution and staying mentally strong when it matters most.
With confidence high inside the Nigerian camp and preparations completed, Didih is convinced Team Nigeria has what it takes to make a significant impact when the Games get underway, and she intends to be among the athletes leading the country’s medal charge.
