‘Wearing Nigeria’s Colours Is My Greatest Honour’ — Triple African Champion Omolola Sets Sights On Commonwealth Games Glory

Nigeria’s three-time African weightlifting champion Didih Onome Omolola says winning medals for the country is a dream come true as she shifts focus to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Fresh from a dominant performance at the 2026 African Weightlifting Championships, Nigerian weightlifting star Didih Onome Omolola has declared that representing her country remains the greatest achievement of her career as she turns her attention to the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Omolola was one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the continental championships, capturing three gold medals to reinforce her status as one of Africa’s leading weightlifters and boost confidence ahead of next month’s multi-sport event in Scotland.

Reflecting on her latest success, the national champion described competing for Nigeria as the fulfilment of a lifelong ambition, saying every opportunity to wear the green and white jersey carries special meaning.

“Representing Nigeria has always been my dream. Every time I wear the country’s colours, I feel honoured, and winning these gold medals makes the journey even more rewarding,” Omolola said.

The weightlifter is now fully focused on translating her continental dominance into success on the Commonwealth stage, where Team Nigeria will be looking to maintain its proud tradition in one of the nation’s most successful sports.

Omolola also expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation for its continued support throughout her career, paying special tribute to the federation’s president, Abdullahi Shuaibu, whose encouragement, she said, has strengthened her confidence ahead of the Games.

“The support from the federation and especially the President, Abdullahi Shuaibu, has been incredible. His encouragement has motivated me to keep pushing myself, and I’m determined to make Nigeria proud again,” she added.

Weightlifting has consistently been one of Nigeria’s biggest medal-winning sports at major international competitions, producing Olympic, Commonwealth and African champions over the years.

Expectations will once again be high as Team Nigeria heads to Glasgow, with Omolola expected to be among the country’s strongest medal prospects.

With the Commonwealth Games scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2, the triple African champion says her focus is now firmly on ensuring that her impressive form on the continent is replicated on the international stage, as she chases another memorable chapter in her rapidly growing career.
