Super Falcons defender Glory Ogbonna has insisted that Nigeria will not take Malawi lightly when both sides meet in their opening Group C fixture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The record 10-time African champions begin their quest for a record-extending 11th continental title against the tournament debutants, but Ogbonna says the Super Falcons are fully aware that every team at the competition has earned its place.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, the defender stressed that Nigeria’s approach will not change regardless of the opposition’s pedigree or FIFA ranking.
“We are not looking at whether Malawi are making their debut or where they are ranked. Every team deserves respect, and we will approach the game with the same desire and determination,” Ogbonna said.
The defender added that the Super Falcons have prepared thoroughly for the tournament and are determined to begin their campaign on a positive note.
“Our mentality is to give everything in every match. We know what is expected of us, and we are ready to fight for the three points,” she added.
Nigeria heads into the competition as the defending champions and one of the favourites to lift the trophy once again, with the tournament also serving as Africa’s qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Ogbonna believes maintaining focus and intensity from the opening whistle will be crucial as the Super Falcons seek to avoid complacency against an improving Malawi side that qualified for its maiden WAFCON tournament after impressive performances during the qualifiers.
The defender is expected to play an important role in Nigeria’s backline as the Super Falcons aim to combine defensive solidity with attacking quality in their pursuit of another successful continental campaign.
Victory over Malawi would hand Nigeria the ideal start to its title defence and strengthen the team’s bid to secure a place in the knockout stage as they continue their pursuit of an unprecedented 11th WAFCON crown and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
