Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has declared that securing all three points against Malawi is Nigeria’s overriding objective as the defending champions prepare to begin their campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The 10-time African champions face tournament debutants Malawi in their Group C opener, with victory expected to provide the perfect platform for Nigeria’s quest to retain the continental title and qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Ajibade stressed that while attractive football and tactical discipline are important, winning remains the ultimate objective in tournament football.
“The most important thing is getting the three points. You can play beautiful football, but if you don’t win, it counts for very little in a competition like this,” Ajibade said.
The Atlético Madrid forward also praised Malawi’s rapid progress in women’s football, noting that the Scorchers deserve respect for qualifying for their maiden WAFCON tournament.
“Malawi’s qualification shows how much women’s football has grown in their country. They’ve invested in the game, and many of their players are now competing in top-flight leagues. We respect them, but our focus is on starting with a victory,” she added.
Ajibade insisted the Super Falcons will approach the contest with humility and professionalism despite Nigeria’s rich history in the competition, warning that no team can be underestimated at the continental championship.
The captain is expected to play a key leadership role for a Nigerian squad blending experienced internationals with emerging talents as they pursue a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
Beyond continental glory, the tournament also serves as Africa’s qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, making every group-stage fixture crucial for the Super Falcons.
Nigeria will now turn its attention to the opening clash against Malawi, with Ajibade determined to lead the Super Falcons to a winning start as they continue their pursuit of another African crown and a place at the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.
