‘We Let Nigeria Down’ — Echegini Apologises After Super Falcons’ Historic World Cup Failure

Super Falcons midfielder Jennifer Echegini has apologised to Nigerians following the team’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and their failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria entered the tournament as defending champions but failed to reach the semi-finals after a 1–0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon.

The Super Falcons were subsequently given another opportunity to reach the World Cup through the CAF play-off, but suffered a 2–1 defeat to South Africa, ending their hopes of qualifying for the tournament in Brazil.

The result means Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition was established in 1991.

Echegini expressed her disappointment with the outcome and apologised to Nigerians, acknowledging that the team had fallen short of expectations.

“We let the country down, but we will come back stronger.”

The Paris Saint-Germain midfielder said the players would use the experience as a learning opportunity rather than allow the disappointment to define the future of the team.

Nigeria’s campaign began with a shock defeat to Malawi before the Falcons recovered with a victory over Zambia to advance from their group. However, the loss to Cameroon ended their title defence before South Africa completed the setback in the World Cup play-off.

Echegini believes the players must now reflect on what went wrong and use the lessons from the tournament to improve.

Her comments come as the Super Falcons face a period of rebuilding, with questions already being raised about the team’s preparation, technical direction and squad development.

The disappointment has also intensified calls for Nigerian football authorities to examine the structures supporting the women’s national team, particularly as other African nations continue to improve and challenge Nigeria’s traditional dominance.

Despite the setback, Echegini remains confident that the Super Falcons can respond positively.

The midfielder’s message is that the historic disappointment must become a learning experience as Nigeria begins the process of rebuilding for its next international challenges.
