Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has spoken candidly about the mental demands of being a goalkeeper, revealing how she protects her mental health by shutting out negative comments on social media as Nigeria prepares for a crucial Group C clash against Zambia at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The shot-stopper addressed the media on Friday, days after Nigeria’s disappointing 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening group match, a result that attracted criticism from fans and pundits.
Nnadozie admitted the defeat was painful but stressed that the players have taken responsibility for the performance and remain determined to bounce back against the Copper Queens.
“Goalkeeping is one of the hardest positions on the pitch. People don’t always realise how mentally demanding it is,” Nnadozie said.
“You can make 99 great saves, but people will only remember the one mistake that leads to a goal. That’s why I try not to pay attention to negative comments on social media. My focus is on improving and helping my team.”
The 25-year-old insisted that one poor result should not define either her career or the quality of the Super Falcons.
“We know we disappointed Nigerians against Malawi, and we accept responsibility. But one bad game doesn’t make us a bad team. We have learned from our mistakes and our attention is now fully on Zambia.”
Nigeria, nine-time African champions, sit third in Group C after the opening-round defeat and must secure a positive result against Zambia to keep their hopes of defending the WAFCON title alive.
The Copper Queens head into the encounter in confident mood following their emphatic 6-0 victory over Egypt in their opening fixture, setting up a high-stakes showdown with the Super Falcons.
Despite the setback against Malawi, Nnadozie maintained that morale within the Nigerian camp remains high.
“We’re united as a team, we’ve worked hard in training, and everyone is motivated. We know what this match means and we’ll give everything to make Nigerians proud again.”
Head coach Justin Madugu has also thrown his support behind the goalkeeper, expressing confidence that both Nnadozie and the Super Falcons will respond positively in Saturday’s must-win encounter.
