Nigeria’s Super Falcons could face a complicated qualification scenario if three teams finish level on points in their WAFCON 2026 group.
The Confederation of African Football has established clear regulations for determining group-stage rankings when three or more teams finish with the same number of points at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The rule could become particularly important in a group involving Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia, where the final positions may ultimately be decided by results between the teams.
When three teams are tied on points, CAF does not immediately use overall goal difference. Instead, it first considers the points obtained in matches among the tied teams.
If the teams remain level, the next criterion is goal difference in those head-to-head matches, followed by goals scored in the matches involving the tied teams.
This effectively creates a mini-table involving only the teams that are level on points.
If the application of the criteria leaves two teams tied, CAF applies the relevant head-to-head criteria again between those two sides.
Only after those calculations fail to separate the teams will CAF move to the overall group-stage records.
The next criteria are overall goal difference in all group matches, followed by overall goals scored in all group matches.
If the teams remain inseparable after all the sporting criteria have been exhausted, the final option is a drawing of lots by the CAF Organising Committee.
WAFCON 2026 Three-Team Tie-Breaker Order
The procedure is:
Points from matches among the tied teams.
Goal difference from those matches.
Goals scored in those matches.
Head-to-head criteria if two teams remain tied.
Overall goal difference.
Overall goals scored.
Drawing of lots.
The regulations mean Nigeria must not only focus on points but also the results and goal difference against the other teams involved in any potential three-way tie.
With qualification for the knockout stage at stake, every goal and result could ultimately prove decisive in determining who advances to the WAFCON 2026 quarter-finals.
