WAFCON 2022: Another Semifinals, Another Rivalry Win, 5 Take Away From The Super Falcons Win Against Cameroon

The Super Falcons continued their long standing dominance over their long continental rivals, the Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon.

A hard earned 1-0 win saw the Super Falcons qualify for the semifinals of the 14th edition of the 2022 Women Africa Cup of Nations.

Ngozi Okobi’s burst of pace and quick feet found Ifeoma Onumunu whose well timed cross from found Rasheedat Ajibade whose powerful header was helped in by the upright.

It is another World Cup, another semifinals and the Super Falcons are going for a 10th straight title but here are 5 things I took from the Cameroon defeat.

1. Supremacy continues

The clash yesterday was the 10th meeting between Africa’s top two countries in women football. The Super Falcons now edge with 5 wins and 2 draws.

The supremacy continues for the Nigerians.

2. Growth

The Super Falcons have now grown into the tournament after that shaky start against South Africa.

The ladies dominated every area of the pitch against Cameroon and defended in an organized manner when it mattered most.

3. It’s Ajibade’s time finally

No Desire Oparanozie, no Asisat Oshoala, no worries. The Super Falcons have got Rasheedat Ajibade.

The Atletico Madrid Women forward is flourishing for the Falcons. Her 3 goals is the highest in the tournament so far.

4. Okobi’s midfield

The midfield combination of Ngozi Okobi, Halimatu Ayinde and Christy Ucheibe brought energy, work rate and freedom.

The trio had a fantastic game especially Ngozi Okobi whose dribbles created the match winner.

5. The hosts could be tricky

Next for the defending champions and record holders are the host, the Atlas Lioness of Morocco.

The young energetic side could be tricky. They were beaten at the Aisha Buhari Cup last year but the WAFCON is a different stage especially with the home crowd behind them.

Nigeria versus Morocco will come up on Monday, 18th July.
