Despite the disappointment of a denied U.S. scholarship visa last December, Nigerian quarter-miler Gafari Badmus has turned adversity into motivation, crediting the timely intervention of the Athletics Uplift Network for reigniting his drive.

The visa setback dealt a heavy emotional and physical blow to the talented 400m runner, who had hoped to advance his career abroad.
“It really weighed me down because having to continue here is extra work mentally and physically. But I trusted God, and this has fired up my spirit to keep doing my best,” Gafari revealed.
In a defining twist, 2025 became a breakthrough year. Gafari stormed to the National 400m Title, establishing himself among Nigeria’s elite one-lap runners. He followed up with victory at the CAA Region II Championships, reinforcing his dominance on the regional stage.
His consistency stood out even more, delivering multiple sub-46-second performances over 400m — a significant marker of progression into elite territory and a series of new personal bests.
Recognizing his resilience and potential, the Athletics Uplift Network selected Gafari and fellow athlete Chioma Nweke as beneficiaries of a one-year sponsorship initiative ahead of the 2026 season.
“I appreciate the Athletics Uplift Network for this special opportunity,” he said.
Beyond financial backing, the support has restored belief and strengthened his resolve — proving that setbacks can sometimes be the spark for even greater achievements.
