Visa Blow Shatters Nigeria’s World Youth Championships Dream as Egypt, Tunisia Step In

Nigeria’s hopes of showcasing its rising table tennis talents on the global stage have suffered a major setback after the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) confirmed that the country’s youth team has been denied visas for the 2025 ITTF World Youth Championships in Romania scheduled for November 23–30.

The development, described as “deeply disappointing” within Nigerian table tennis circles, means the nation will not feature in the U15 and U19 boys’ team events—categories the team rightfully earned by emerging champions at the 2025 ITTF-Africa Youth Championships in Lagos.

The squad, led by reigning West African champion Kuti Matthew, had fought through intense continental competition to secure Nigeria’s qualification. Their victory was celebrated nationwide as a promising sign of the country’s growing dominance in youth table tennis.

However, hopes were abruptly dashed when the team’s visa applications were rejected, forcing the ITTF to replace Nigeria with Egypt and Tunisia for the respective team events.

The setback has sparked concerns about the challenges African athletes continue to face when attempting to compete internationally, despite meeting qualification standards. For the young Nigerian players, the decision comes as a heartbreaking blow after months of rigorous preparations and high expectations.

“These boys gave everything to qualify—this is not just a missed tournament, it’s a missed opportunity for their careers,” an NTTF official lamented.

As the global championship commences without one of Africa’s brightest youth contingents, calls are growing for more streamlined processes to ensure qualified athletes are not denied the chance to compete on merit.
