Former Super Eagles’ striker and 1997 African Footballer of The Year, Victor Nosa Ikpeba has promised that he will continue to expand and improve a 5-a-side competition named after him in Surulere area of Lagos, Sports247 reports.

‘The Prince of Monaco’ gave the pledge while announcing an increment in the prize money at stake for this year’s edition of the annual Victor Ikpeba 5-A-Side Football Challenge, with the total package now rising to N1m.

Eight teams are primed to take part in the upcoming sixth edition of the illustrious competition, which will again hold at Community Centre on Fujah Street, Surulere, where the final will also come up on June 12th to mark Ikpeba’s birthday.

He further disclosed that this year’s champions will take home N500,000 for their efforts, which is an improvement on N300,000 for last year, while the second-placed side will get N250,000 and N150,000 goes to third place as well as N100,000 to fourth best.

Ikpeba, who was part of Nigeria’s gold medal-winning under-23 team at Atlanta ’96 Olympics and backs the competition with support from Bet9Ja, said, “It’s our contribution to keep the youth busy and off the wild street with something tangible.

“We have added to the prize money to get them more excited. I expect this increment will add value to the entire tournament. We are taking it one step at a time, and we will keep growing and expanding the event by the grace of God.”
