Victor Boniface to Miss Remainder of Season After Werder Bremen Knee Surgery Decision

Werder Bremen have confirmed that Nigerian international Victor Boniface will miss the rest of the 2025/26 season after the club decided surgery was the best solution to his persistent knee problem.

The 25-year-old striker, on a season-long loan from Bayer Leverkusen, has struggled with ongoing knee issues since joining Bremen, making 11 appearances across competitions and providing two assists.

Persistent discomfort had already limited his game time and affected his performances, and even led to the collapse of a proposed move to AC Milan during the summer transfer window.

Following specialist consultations in Austria with knee expert Professor Dr. Christian Fink, and in alignment with assessments from Werder Bremen’s medical team and Bayer Leverkusen doctors, it was agreed that surgical intervention offered the clearest path to full recovery. Boniface has consented to proceed with the operation.

Peter Niemeyer, Werder Bremen’s Head of Professional Football, expressed relief at the decision. “We are pleased that we have now found a solution and that Victor will undergo surgery. This provides clarity for all parties. Due to the rehabilitation process, we no longer expect Victor to play for Werder this season,” he said.

Despite the absence, the loan arrangement between Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen remains intact until the end of the campaign.

Boniface is expected to begin rehabilitation immediately after the procedure, with his return to competitive action dependent on the pace of recovery.

The operation marks a crucial step for Boniface in addressing a long-standing issue, with both clubs prioritizing his long-term fitness and career longevity over short-term appearances.

This development will leave a gap in Bremen’s attacking options for the remainder of the season, while Boniface focuses on a full recovery in hopes of returning stronger for the next campaign.
