In a bold move to strengthen sports development in Imo State, Governor Hope Uzodimma has appointed Olympic gold medalist and former African Footballer of the Year, Emmanuel Amuneke, as the state’s Grand Ambassador for Sports Development.

Uzodimma hailed Amuneke’s contribution to the establishment and growth of the Imo Dream Team — a grassroots initiative aimed at scouting and nurturing young talent across the state. The Governor stated that Amuneke’s leadership and global experience have become instrumental in reshaping the sports narrative in Imo.

“His experience and leadership have inspired the Imo Dream Team. Our support has not stopped at appearances; we have committed resources to sports infrastructure, coaching programs, and grassroots scouting — creating a pipeline for future champions,” Uzodimma said.

Amuneke, a former Super Eagles winger renowned for his iconic goals at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and the Olympics, is expected to use his new role to drive talent discovery, sports policy advocacy, and partnerships with both local and international bodies to elevate Imo’s sporting profile.

This appointment comes amid ongoing investments in stadium upgrades, community tournaments, and youth-focused programs in the state, positioning Imo as an emerging hub for sports excellence in Nigeria.
